Sit and talk with me, Dad about things . . . Stuff, I often wonder about and cannot understand. The new video game you just rented for me doesn’t replace the time I need with you, and, frankly, I shouldn’t be learning how to become a criminal by way of electronic games. The money you handed me today came in handy, but it doesn’t replace your time with me. Sure, I loved the ice cream cone, but it would have tasted better if you shared one with me.
Sit with me, Dad on the porch tonight and tell me about life. Please tell me what to expect and how to deal with things long after you’re gone. Dad, show me the way! No one should guide me other than you, Dad. I trust your thoughts. Tell me, Dad, what you did in certain situations as you were growing up. Dad, show me how to become a good person because, without your guidance, I could go wrong.
Teach me, Dad, how to become a carpenter, plumber, mechanic, or a house painter, even if I goof up. It’s hard to imagine, but someday I might be a parent with a car of my own and a home that might need work. Dad, I am not too old for daily good hugs or for you to hold my hand. I need your attention. Laugh with me when I make mistakes. Tell me funny jokes, and help me pull off frequent gags. Take me fishing, camping, or just walk and talk with me. Show me the constellations tonight and joke about the man in the moon. We don’t have to leave the porch to go on an adventure.
I don’t care what we do, Dad, as long as we are together and talking about life. Dad talk about anything because just hearing your voice makes me feel safe. Dad, I might getting taller, but I am still your baby in this growing body. Dad, I don’t want to go wrong like some of my friends have, so sit with me, Dad. I need you now.
Dad, the best part of my life is when we just sit and talk. Give me your time, and I will hang on your every word. I trust, and I love you, Dad!
